ABOUT HARFORD’S SOUTHERN COUNTY
We welcome you to Harford’s “Southern County.” We take great pride in our communities - many of them based on the water’s edge of the Bush River and Chesapeake Bay, where families enjoy numerous water sports and recreational facilities. The Aberdeen Proving Ground/Edgewood Area is known as the "Global Leader in Chemical and Biological Research and Technology" attracting the high tech businesses and skilled workers responsible for guiding our nation in the development of defense programs.
Located near Interstate I-95 and the historic Route 40 corridor, Harford’s Southern County is attracting new businesses to its Enterprise Zone - designated by the Maryland Department of Business & Economic Development. Through innovative programs, our Southern County is proving itself to be a progressive community where technology and entrepreneurial spirit is not only growing . . . but thriving.
Harford’s Southern County offers both suburban and rural lifestyles with a variety of housing and shopping opportunities to meet any personal need. We embrace our diverse population of people living and working here and invite you to come see what makes us special.

EDGEWOOD A COMMUNITY ON THE ‘GROW’
Edgewood, Maryland is experiencing a great renaissance, stirring civic pride and generating more interest in its unique history. The unincorporated community of Edgewood is located equidistant from the Bush and Gunpowder rivers in the southern area of Harford County once known as Gunpowder Neck. It has no official boundaries, but generally speaking Edgewood is bounded by Interstate-95 to the north, Maryland Route 152 to the west, the Edgewood Area of the Aberdeen Proving Ground to the south, and the HaHa Branch of Otter Point Creek to the east.
Grace Callwood’s favorite way to make people laugh is to cross her eyes. This Abingdon resident is no stranger to bringing joy to others. When she was just three years old, she donated all but one birthday toy she received to the pediatric unit at University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Medical Center. Neither is she a stranger to hospitals. Callwood was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma in 2011 and spent ten days being treated. It was just a few weeks into her diagnosis that little Grace realized “small acts of kindness could help other children whose lives experienced misfortunes outside of their control.”
Harford’s “Southern County Magaine, produced quarterly by Southern County Publishing, is designed to help promote the areas of Edgewood, APG-Edgewood Area, Abingdon, Joppa Town, Joppa, Belcamp and Bush River - to share in the wonderful sense of community one finds here. We are proud to be Harford's "Southern County!"
